Obituary

Alvie Lee "Cotton" Jones, 84, of Comyn, passed away Friday, October 14, 2016. He was born September 10, 1932 in Carlton, Texas to J.D. Jones Sr. and Levena Elder Jones. Alvie married his beloved wife Enda Lois Rackley on February 11, 1959 in Big Lake Texas.

Alvie grew up and lived in Hico Texas until enlisting in the United States Navy in 1952. He honorably served as a mechanical engineer aboard a select group of ships with which he earned the extremely rare status of Golden Shellback, which is a person who has crossed the Equator at the 180th meridian (International Date Line). Alvie's unique and extensive knowledge of engineering and mechanics enabled him to assist in the development and implementation of remote controlled navel defense systems technology during its infancy. He was also stationed on Kwajalein Island participating in Operation Crossroads during the first of several series of nuclear tests. Alvie proudly received numerous commendations from the Navy in recognition for his sacrifice and many tours of duty including the distinguished Bronze Star Medal. Alvie loved serving his country and was a proud American. After twenty- three years of dedicated service to his country he would retire in 1975.

Alvie's love for mechanics continued throughout his life after retirement, he remained diligent in furthering his knowledge and skills through tinkering and working on engines and electronics of all types for the remainder of his life. One of his greatest pleasures was always being available and the one to call for anyone in trouble or needing help. His service to his town and community will be greatly missed. Alvie was a man of morals, respect, creditability, love, and faith. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Benton and her husband, Art; sisters, Mary Nell Hesse, Phyllis Hatchett and Virginia Waller; brother, Wade Jones; grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other extended family. Alvie was preceded in death by wife, Edna Lois Jones; parents, J.D. Jones, Sr. and Levena Elder Jones; sisters, Leona Cox and Mamye Casey; and brothers, J.D. Jones, Jr., Billy W. Jones and Wayne Jones.
