Asa Hawley Merrick, 82, of Comanche, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016, in Benbrook, Texas.
He was born December 13, 1933, in Brewster, New York, to Richard H. Merrick and Mildred Hawley Merrick. Asa moved to Comanche in 1993.
Asa was a member of East Side Baptist Church of Comanche. He served on the Comanche City Council for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a medic during the Cold War era. In his younger years, Asa worked with his family on their dairy. He later was employed with the State of New York, Department of Mental Hygiene. He enjoyed any activity that allowed him to spend time outdoors. He liked to garden, work on tractors, and work with wood. He was a talented carpenter and even built two of his own homes. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his two brothers, Lee Merrick and John C. Merrick; cousins, Douglas Salmon, Dr. William Merrick, Judy Merrick, and Wanda Merrick, and their families; and dear friends, Mike and Connie Seal. Asa was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mildred Merrick.
Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, August 4, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in Zion Hill Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation at 191 Waukegan Road, Ste 105, Northfield, IL 60093, in memory of Asa.
