Betty Smith, 75, of De Leon, went home to her Lord and Savior Saturday, May 17, 2014, with her family by her side. She was born October 14, 1938, in Big Springs, Texas, to Herrald C. and Verna Lee Jay Abels. She married Bill Smith October 14, 1974 in Clyde, Texas.
Betty was a member of De Leon First United Methodist Church. She was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and friend. She and Bill owned and operated Smith Flying Service for many years. She loved helping Bill build their family business.
Betty loved animals, collecting Indian art work and fossils, gardening and being outdoors. Her family was the light of her life and she enjoyed any time spent with them.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bill Smith; sons, Todd Downs and wife, Deanna, and Jack Bouchier; daughter, GiGi Prusak and husband, David; grandchildren, Taylor Bouchier, Ryan Howard, Madison Downs and Jordan Downs; great-grandsons, Dakota Howard, Landon Howard and Micah Howard; brother, Bob Abels; and nephew, Lee Abels. Betty was preceded by her parents.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Nowlin Anders Funeral Home. Brother Jackie Auvenshine officiated the services. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011, in memory of Betty.
