On October 24, 1924, Jewel Brownlee Locke and Byron Locke welcomed their first child, a daughter, Dorothy Jean, into their world. They lived in Comanche County, Texas. This is where she grew up and it was there that she accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. Her parents later welcomed her brother, Charles, who quickly became her cohort and, most-likely, caused their parents a lot of worry. The family was not complete until two sisters were added to the family, Sarah Ann and Marilyn Sue (whom mother named), made their family complete.
On Monday morning, September 12, Dorothy's journey on earth was complete. She took her final breath, in this life, in Yukon, Oklahoma with her daughters and their husbands by her side.
Dorothy married W.J. (Dub) Whitney in 1949. They made their life in Odessa, Texas. She loved music; and taught piano lessons for many years. She also dearly loved her family and friends, but most of all she loved Jesus. She would ask every one she met if they were saved or if they needed prayer. She was a prayer warrior and was often contacted by friends, family and strangers alike, asking to be mentioned in her daily conversations with God.
She had said a sad, "See you later", to many; including her beloved husband, her parents, brother Charles and his wife Pansy. Also, grandson Owen Whitney (Bumper) Carr, grandson Jackson Owen Dabney, grandson-in-law Trouper Gamble, as well as many close friends, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Don Bell of Yukon, Oklahoma; daughter and son-in-law, Carla and David Cheairs of Mansfield, Texas; her grandchildren; Deneine Duroy, Brad Bell, Dara Gamble, Kyna Adams, Shannon Carr; great-grandchildren; Brandon Wilkerson and his wife Becky, Lauren Duroy, Ryan Gamble and Emily Gamble. Also, her beloved sisters; Sarah Ann Ledford and husband Roland, Sue Breznik and husband Tommy. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and friends that she greatly loved.
Services were held Thursday, September 15, at 11 a.m., in De Leon, Texas at Nowlin Anders Funeral Home. Interment followed In the De Leon Cemetery.
