Douglas "Terry"
Barnes
Feb 14, 1942 — Mar 25, 2020
Douglas Terry Barnes, 78, of Dallas, peacefully passed away March 25, 2020, in Carrollton, Texas. He was born February 14, 1942, in Gorman, Texas to William Thomas Barnes and Elsie Marie Sanders Barnes of De Leon. Terry married the love of his life, Janet, on September 3, 1977.
Terry grew up in De Leon in a home next to the family business, Barnes Lumber. He graduated from Tarleton State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1965. During college, he married Jo Carolyn Dendy, also of De Leon and the mother of his two sons. He proudly served in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserve. His service included being stationed in Cam Ranh Bay during the Vietnam War. Terry began his career working in banking in Fort Worth in the mid-1960s. After a long and varied business career, he eventually retired in 2012.
Terry and Janet were members of First Dallas Seventh Day Adventist church. Terry loved watching football, especially his beloved Texas Longhorns. When he was not watching football, he was often adding to his vast knowledge of the game. He also enjoyed watching religious programs and old westerns. Earlier in his life, he enjoyed reading and collecting books about the Old West. He recently donated his entire collection to the library at the DeLeon Free Press. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Terry is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Janet; his two sons, Doug Barnes of Austin and Brad Barnes of Plano; other extended family; and his and Janet's faithful canine companion, Mike. Terry has been reunited with his parents; and his sister, Beverly.
Private graveside services were held Monday, March 30, 2020, in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Erath County with Brother Daniel Harper officiating. Public memorial services can be held at a later date. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Terry, Autry Andress, David Wayne Scott, Sandy Sanders, Nick Cunningham, Charley Harding, and the 1960 DeLeon Bearcats football team.
