Durwood Strube, of Proctor, went home to his Lord and Savior Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the age of 78.
He was born September 7, 1937, in Dublin, Texas, to N.H. "Bill" Strube and Winnie Margaret Gray Strube. He married Donna Joan Neal December 23, 1955, in Proctor.
Durwood lived in the Proctor community for over 53 years. He was employed as a sewing machine mechanic for Sidran Manufacturing in Brownwood for over 45 years and as a musician as well. He was a member of Hope Masonic Lodge of Comanche, York Rite Lodge of Brownwood, and a past member of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Cowboy Church of Erath County for many years. Durwood was a charter member of the Cowtown Society of Western Music and received the President's Choice Award in 2004. He was inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame in 2011, the Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest in 2013, and the North West Western Swing Music Society in 2014. Durwood was active with various cutting horse associations and loved trail riding. He enjoyed playing western swing music, riding cutting horses and playing fast pitch softball. Durwood loved spending time with his family and many friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Butler and husband Lanny; son, Charles "Bubba" Strube, Jr. and wife, Julie; loving companion, Jennifer Hutchings; grandchildren, Amy Stancoven and husband, Kevin, Neal Butler and wife, Brianna, Jessica Strube, Chauncy Strube and wife, Chelsea, and Marcie Keeter and husband, Dustin; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Glenda Hargrove; numerous nieces and nephews; and other extended family.
Durwood was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Joan Strube; son, Kerry Strube; parents, N.H. "Bill" and Winnie Strube; brother, Norman Strube; and sister, Shirley Sides; brothers-in-law, Norman Sides and Donald Hargrove.
Graveside funeral services, with Masonic Rites, were held Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in Proctor Cemetery with Brother Werth Mayes and Brother Gene Ruggles officiating.
