Dyrl Evers Brownlee of De Leon passed away on January 3, 2020, following a lengthy illness.
The first of three sons, Dyrl was born in Gorman on January 4, 1939 to Cecil and Inez Brownlee. He grew up in De Leon, graduated from De Leon High School in 1957 and, two years later, married his high school sweetheart Patricia Donohue on October 3, 1959, in the First Christian Church of De Leon. In 1960, Dyrl and Pat moved to Kermit where they both worked hard for many years, raised three children, and made lifelong friends. They returned to De Leon in 1994 following Dyrl's retirement from Oryx Energy. There they enjoyed spending time with Cecil and Inez, as well as other family members and many dear friends.
To some, he might have seemed a bit gruff. But he had a tender heart and was sensitive to those who struggled, often leaving an anonymous gift of cash to help. Dyrl was a soft touch when it came to animals, particularly strays, and he cared for many sweet dogs and cats over the years, including current pets Penney and Kitty Tom. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and eating Mexican food, and took pride in the beautiful vegetable garden that he maintained for many years. Dyrl was happy watching just about any televised sports event, particularly college football, and especially the Longhorns and Red Raiders. He made it clear on the day before he passed that the Longhorns were his favorite.
Dyrl is survived by Pat Brownlee, his wife of 60 years; three children and their spouses (Becky Brownlee and Ross Ramsey of Austin, John and Susan Brownlee of De Leon, and Amy and David Phillips of Georgetown); and three beloved grandchildren (Jack Kelley, Jenna Ramsey, and Victoria Phillips). He is also survived by his brothers Lyndon Brownlee and wife Judy Brownlee of Brownwood, and David Brownlee of De Leon, along with two nieces and a nephew, and numerous cousins and friends. His family and friends loved him and will miss him. Dyrl was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Inez Brownlee.
A memorial service was held at 2 pm on Tuesday, January 7, at First Christian Church in De Leon, with Brother Daniel Burlison officiating. For those wishing to do so, the family suggests memorial contributions to First Christian Church of De Leon or to a favorite charity.
