Ernestine (Ernie) Hammett, 77, of San Antonio, passed away Friday, August 9, 2019. She was born May 29, 1942, in De Leon to William George Hammett and Sarah Pearl Stone Hammett.

Ernie graduated from De Leon High School in 1960. She then received her Bachelor Degree in Education from Howard Payne University. After graduating, Ernie moved to San Antonio where she taught Science and coached athletics until her retirement. She loved coaching the youth in sports. She also enjoyed making pottery. Ernie was a devoted Christian and had a true servant's heart. She was always volunteering of her time to help those less fortunate. She was a loving daughter, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her brother, Jackie Dean Hammett; other extended family; and many dear friends. Ernie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sarah Hammett; and sister-in-law, Ursula Hammett.

Graveside funeral services celebrating Ernie's life were held Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at 10 a.m. in De Leon Cemetery with Brother Jackie Auvenshine officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may be made St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in memory of Ernie.
