Grace Evelyn Otwell passed peacefully early in the morning of December 15th, 2015.
Grace, or "Granny" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born in Georgia on August 3rd, 1920, to Henry and Cora Bell Wyatt. She had one brother, and one sister. She was married to Charlie Frank Otwell and had two children, Patricia and Gary Otwell.
Following her mother's death when she was 8, Grace moved from Georgia to De Leon, Texas, to be raised by her Aunt Mamie Carnes. She attended De Leon High School, but did not graduate as she had met her husband, Charlie Frank Otwell, and decided to marry and start a family. They were married in September of 1938. Grace worked as a secretary in the offices of JC Penny until she retired and helped in the raising of her grandchildren.
Grace was a product of a different world than the one we live in today. A time without social media, cell phones, or even TV's. Her life revolved around one thing particularly: her family. She became the wife of Charlie Otwell at the age of 18, and it was all about family from then on. As a parent, Grace passed the loyalty and love she felt for family to her children. She taught them to love and laugh and never give up on each other. Something that is still instilled into her family today and is seen down to even the youngest generations.
Grace was an eye witness to some of this country's most historical moments. From the great depression to Pearl Harbor to the death of Elvis to mankind walking on the moon. Grace saw it all. And though she loved to sit and talk about these great moments in history, there was a light in her eye when talking about her family. The memories she had of her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and her great-great grandson were the most precious moments in the history of the world to Grace. The strength of the love she has for our family is a symbol of the bond our family has with each other. Grace will forever be remembered as the founder of our family and a constant reminder that family is the most important thing we can ever possess.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Cora Bell and Henry Wyatt; two brothers; one sister; her husband, Frank Otwell; and children Patricia and Leroy Mosher and Gary Otwell.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Nancy Otwell; grandchildren, Tracy Mosher, Tammy and John Crosby, and Sean and Amanda Mosher; nine great-grandchildren, Josh Crosby, Jacob and Kelly Crosby, Amber and Chris Picasso, Brett Mosher, Chelsea Mosher, Brianna Mosher, and Alexis Mosher; and one great, great-grandchild, Jackson Crosby.
Graveside funeral services were held Friday, December 18, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. in De Leon Cemetery with Brother Daniel Harper officiating.
