Hallie Olene Hunter Strickland went home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. She was born August 29, 1922 at home at the old Bounds' place near Streetman, Freestone County, Texas. She was the third of five children born to Frank E. and Cora Faircloth Hunter.
In 1927 the Hunter family moved to Lubbock, Texas. Hallie excelled in school and was a 1939 honor graduate of Lubbock High School at the age of 16. She supported herself by working as secretary for Ms. Clara Pratt, Lubbock County Home Demonstration Agent while she attended Texas Tech for three semesters. During this time she met Harry Strickland of Comanche County, Texas at College Avenue (now University Avenue) Baptist Church while he also was attending Texas Tech. Hallie had to drop out of school during the third semester because she contracted tuberculosis and had to spend nine months of complete bed rest at the T.B. Sanatorium near San Angelo, Texas before returning to Lubbock.
In April 1946 Hallie and Harry were married in Lubbock while he was on leave from the United States Navy. After Harry finished his naval commitment in Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, he joined Humble (now Exxon Mobile) Oil Company in Houston, Texas as a civil engineer. The Houston climate aggravated Hallie's tuberculosis, so they requested a transfer to west Texas. Exxon moved them frequently so they lived for periods of time in Midland, Odessa, Colorado City, Snyder, Stanton, Andrews, Evansville Indiana and Oklahoma City. Harry took medical retirement and passed away in 1979.
While in Midland, Hallie was the testing secretary for the Texas State Employment Commission (now the Texas Workforce Commission). While in Andrews she was the secretary for Northern Natural Gas (later Enron). Hallie loved her family and her church. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She started teaching children's Sunday School classes when she was 14 years old and continued teaching at church throughout most of her life. She was accomplished in knitting, crocheting, and sewing.
Hallie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Elmer (Fern), James William (Iva), Raymond (Mary) Hunter and sister Edith (Melvin) Jones. She is survived by son David and wife Georgie, son Alan and wife Michelle, daughter Ruth Adair, grandson Neil Strickland and granddaughter Julie (Ian) Harrold and David's stepchildren Ron and Linda as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside funeral service was held Monday, February 16, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. in De Leon Cemetery. If desired, memorials should be made to the charity of choice.
