Harvey Donald
Mitchell
Mar 22, 1936 — May 30, 2018
Harvey Donald Mitchell left for his home with the Lord peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, May 30, 2018. Born on March 22, 1936 to HC "Red" and Helen Mitchell in DeLeon, Don lived most of his life in DeLeon, played football, basketball and ran track for the Bearcats and at Ranger JC.
Don met his wife, Peggy Otwell, also from De Leon, they married on November 17, 1956 at the old Methodist Church and had three daughters, Cathy and Connie (the twins), and Kelly. Don took his girls to live in the Dallas/Ft Worth area for most of their years of growing up, returning for Christmas and weekends to visit family in De Leon until moving back in 1970. After the 3 daughters graduated from De Leon HS, Don and Peggy owned a business in Oklahoma for 10 years before returning to De Leon for their retirement years.
Don had many hobbies and activities he loved including water skiing, golfing, all sports and enjoyed playing even with his grandchildren. Don found his Lord Jesus early in his life but became closer when a close friend shared how to have a more intimate relationship with his Lord through baptism of the Holy Spirit in 1977. Don started sharing that experience and the love of the Savior with everyone since then. Don and Peggy, in retirement, started the 2 or More Coffee Shop in De Leon with that purpose in mind, sharing the love of their Savior over coffee and a meal with those who stopped by.
Don enjoyed a growing family. He is survived by his wife of sixty one years, Peggy Otwell Mitchell; daughter, Cathy Benson and husband, Bill, Connie Parker and husband, Craig, and Kelly Smith and husband, Craig; grandchildren, Cari Benson, Brett Shelly and husband, Joe, Mitchell Benson and wife, Shelby, Brook Benson, Zachary Benson, Mark McElroy Jr., Crissy Zak, Russell McElroy and wife, Sabrina, Dustin Smith and wife, Erin, Kimberly Cantrell and husband, Nic, and Kevin Smith and wife, Molly; great-grandchildren, Brayden Garza and Madyson Zak, Payton, Preslie and Marissa McElroy, Aubrey Smith and Jaxon Cantrell, Revis and Rowan Smith, Ruby and Beau Smith, and Kye Benson; nephews, Rick Bullock and Barbara, and David Bullock and Brooke and their families; and other extended family. Don's commitment to pray for all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren daily was important to him. He loved seeing them and watching them play together. Getting the whole family together often was very important to Don. His parents, HC "Red" and Helen Mitchell, and his sister, Dorothy Mitchell, preceded him. Don is now enjoying his many family members that preceded him to the heavenly kingdom.
A celebration of Don's life was held Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. at De Leon First United Methodist Church with Pastor John Woodard officiating. Interment was held in De Leon Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Don.
