Obituary

Jesse Marvin Moon, Jr. was called to his heavenly home on Sunday, October 27, 2019. He was born in Lucas County Iowa near Chariton Iowa on October 30, 1926 the oldest of four sons born to Jesse Marvin Moon, Sr. and Letty Grace Webber Moon.

Jesse joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 at the age of 16 and served during World War II in the Pacific theater on destroyers and on amphibian landing support craft. On October 25, 1944 while serving on the Destroyer U.S.S. Hoel, the ship was hit in a Japanese attach and sank.  Of the 329 sailors on board there were only 68 survivors who floated in shark infested water for two days before being rescued.  After the war he served in China until the end of his military service in December 1946.

Jesse returned home to Des Moines, Iowa where he married Marlys Willcockson and attended Drake University. He worked for Meredith Publishing as a salesman for several years before moving to Los Angeles, California where he lived for the next 30 years working for companies in the machine tools and aerospace industries.  After the birth of a son, Jonathan, the marriage ended with Jesse getting custody of Jonathan.  He subsequently married Marilyn Wheatly Allen who had a son, Jeffrey, and together they raised both sons.

In 1978 they moved to Texas where Jesse worked in the machine tool business in Midland/Odessa. In 1983 he joined an international electrical construction company based in Louisiana and traveled extensively to many foreign countries doing design and engineering work.  Much of his work was in third world and under developed countries.

Upon retirement he and Marilyn moved to Fort Clark Springs near Del Rio, Texas where he spent much of his time in his shop sharpening saws, primarily industrial saws for manufacturing firms across the border in Mexico. He also worked security for several movies being filmed at the western movie set where the John Wayne epic The Alamo was filmed.  In 1995 in order to be closer to medical services and family, he and Marilyn moved to Early, Texas and in 2002 they relocated to Abilene, Texas.

Marilyn passed away in 2004 and Jeffrey moved in with Jesse to share chores and expenses. Jeffrey passed away in 2014 and Jesse lived with his son Jonathan's family in Keller, Texas until December 2015 when he moved to De Leon, Texas to be near his brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Peggy Moon.  After a heart attack in November 2016 his home became De Leon Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Jesse was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene where he made many friends.  There will be a memorial service at Hillcrest at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 7th with a military honors ceremony to follow at 2:00 pm at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 W. Lake Rd., Abilene, Texas.

Jesse is survived by his son, Jonathan Moon and wife, Eunice; grandson, Mason Moon and granddaughter, Stephanie Norton; and two great grandchildren, Gabriel and Alyssa Norton, all of Keller, Texas; two brothers, Merlin Moon and wife, Joan, of Des Moines, Iowa and Keith Moon and wife, Peggy, of De Leon, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Letty Moon; a brother, Lee Moon; his wife, Marilyn; and step-son, Jeffrey Allen.
