Obituary

Patterson, Joseph Redwine – Born April 16, 1927 in Corsicana, TX and died peacefully in Dallas on January 6, 2017 from complications of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. He was 89 years old.

Preceded in death by his parents Reverend Joseph Isham and Caroline White Patterson of Ft. Worth, TX, wife of 47 years Ann Cumber Patterson, and brother James White Patterson of Austin, TX. Survived by son Joseph Redwine Patterson Jr. of Dallas, daughter Amy Patterson Corley of San Marino, CA, brother Julian Culver Patterson of Temple, TX, four grandchildren, one great grandson and five nieces and nephews.

He graduated Polytechnic High School in 1944 in Ft. Worth, TX, served in the United States Navy during WWII in 1945-1947, was a Sergeant in the US Army Reserves 1950-1953, graduated Southern Methodist University with a B.A. in Philosophy in 1948, M.A. in Government in 1951, and J.D. in 1954. During his time there he served as head cheerleader 1947-1948, and President of the student body in 1948 – 1949. He continued his enthusiasm for SMU with a lifelong support for its school spirit, law school and athletic departments.

He began his legal career as a Dallas County Assistant District Attorney. In 1957 he entered into the private practice of law, and was the founding and senior partner in the law firm Patterson, Lamberty, Stanford, Walls & Dwyer. He retired in 2002. Joe Red was a long time member of University Park United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for over twenty years. He was an active competitor in running, biking, marathons, triathlons and duathlons. Lifelong member and handball player at the downtown Dallas Y.M.C.A., and in November 2016 was inducted into the Dallas Y.M.C.A. Turkey Trot Hall of Fame for over thirty years of volunteer service.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 27th at University Park United Methodist Church, 4024 Caruth Blvd., Dallas, TX at 11:00 A.M. Memorials may be made to Southern Methodist University, the downtown Dallas Y.M.C.A. or a charity of your choice.
