Lawrence P. Montgomery, Jr., 88, of De Leon, went home to his Lord and Savior Friday, May 23, 2014, at De Leon Nursing and Rehab. He was born May 30, 1925 in Nolan County to Lawrence P. Montgomery, Sr. and Effie Bell Wright Montgomery. He married Doris Cadenhead July 16, 1974.
Lawrence proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He received two Purple Heart Awards and numerous other service medals. Lawrence was one of the most highly decorated veterans of Comanche County. He served as the Commander of the local D.A.V. for many years.
After his service, Lawrence farmed and baled hay and also drove a school bus for De Leon ISD for 17 years. He loved the rodeo and when he was unable to attend, he faithfully watched them on TV. He was so knowledgeable about the rodeo circuit, that he could name each winner and their score. He attended St. Joe Baptist Church for years when his dear friend, Jackie Auvenshine, officiated there.
Lawrence is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Doris Montgomery; sons, Larry Montgomery, Dale Montgomery and wife, Maureen, Donny Montgomery and wife, Karen; daughter, Jerry Ann; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, May 25, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in Oakland Cemetery near Gorman. Brother Jackie Auvenshine officiated the service. Pallbearers were Jeff Morton, Joel Morton, Ty Morton, Trent Morton, Brett Burnett, Rick Hickman and Greg Rosier.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joe Baptist Church at PO Box 201, De Leon, Texas 76444, in memory of Lawrence.
