Obituary

Mary Sue Young, 84, of Richardson, TX, passed from this life Sunday, July 9, 2023. She was born November 13, 1938, in Gadsden, AL, to Royce and Velma Louise Hatfield. Mary Sue married Jackie Young, a De Leon native, on August 12, 1961. He preceded her in death in 2002.

Mary Sue moved with her parents, younger sister and two older brothers to the Pleasant Grove (Dallas) area and graduated from Samuell High School. One of her first jobs was with the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas where she met Jackie and began their life together. While Jackie had a 37-year career at the Fed, Mary went on to be a bank teller at various banks up until 2000 when she became a full-time caregiver for him as he suffered from younger onset Alzheimer's. In 2020, Mary Sue was diagnosed with a combination of vascular and frontotemporal dementia. They were married 41 years.

She enjoyed hobbies including changing house décor for every season, listening to and attending country music concerts (Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Blake Shelton, and Elvis Presley were among her favorites), shopping, and embarking on road trips throughout the South. She especially cherished going to Nashville and visiting family in Alabama whom she always missed. She was a collector of dolls, music boxes, figurines, tea sets, and memorabilia. She was a faithful fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

She was incredibly proud of her daughter and even more so of being a part of her granddaughter's life from day one to young adulthood. She found so much joy in babysitting her often in her younger years where their favorite shared activities were making brownies and watching endless episodes of Little House on the Prairie.

Everywhere she went and every encounter Mary Sue had with family and friends created countless belly-laugh-inducing memories (and often aggravations by her stubbornness) for years to come. She will be missed beyond measure by all who knew and loved her. She is now free of pain and suffering and living an eternity of joy and peace with her husband and loved ones in Heaven.

Mary Sue is survived by her daughter, Susan Young; granddaughter, Olivia Yost; sister, Robbie Allen; nieces, Mandy Alexander, Nicki Allen, Laurie McFarlin, Janie Thatcher, Linda Dobbs, Judy Hatfield, and Brenda Power; nephew Gary Hatfield and great-nephew, Conrad Alexander; and other extended family.
