Mary Sherrill
Young
Jun 19, 1930 — Jan 19, 2019
Mary Sherrill Young, 88, of De Leon, peacefully passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019. She was born June 19, 1930, in Clyde, Texas to Lowman Jack Sherrill and Ollie Mae Wade Sherrill. Mary married Clayton Young July 10, 1948, in Crane, Texas.
Mary and Clayton moved to De Leon in 1989 from Meridian. They moved often during their marriage because of Clayton's work in the ministry as a missionary but made De Leon their final home. Mary was a long-time devoted member of Hwy 6 Church of Christ, De Leon. She loved her church family and was faithful in her service to the Lord. She was a dedicated volunteer throughout the De Leon community as well. Her selfless contributions to the community earned her the De Leon Chamber of Commerce Golden Deed Award in 2018. She lovingly served at the De Leon Senior Citizens Center and the De Leon Nursing Home. Mary worked at the De Leon Public Library for over twenty years as well as the Sewing Room in Stephenville. She loved to sew and craft and was extremely talented at both hobbies. In her free time, Mary enjoyed playing dominoes with her friends at the Senior Center. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Terry Wofford and husband, Jim Bob; son, Billy Ray Young; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Sherrill; daughter-in-law, Reedy Welch and husband, Buddy; and other extended family. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Young; son, Clayton Gene Young; daughter, Merle Dean Wilkins; great-grandson, Braeden James Wofford; parents, Lowman and Ollie Mae Sherrill; and sisters, Polly Pearson and Dolly Mae Sherrill.
Funeral services celebrating Mary's life were held Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Church of Christ (HWY 6, De Leon) with Minister Rick Smitherman officiating. Graveside services followed in Desdemona Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the De Leon Senior Citizens Center at 133 W Ball Park Loop, De Leon, in memory of Mary.
