Ruby Lee Mathis, 92, of De Leon, went home to her Lord and Savior Tuesday, March 27, 2018, with her family by her side. She was born September 17, 1925, to Joe and Clara Brazell Underhill. Ruby married James J. (JJ) Mathis in Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1955.
Ruby was a devoted and loving homemaker for her family. She also worked outside the home in the De Leon School Cafeteria. She loved cooking for the students and took a personal responsibility to make sure all the kids had plenty to eat. Her family thoroughly enjoyed her cooking too. They loved her peach cobbler and all her other homemade meals. Ruby lived in the De Leon community all of her life and was Baptist. Ruby was extremely honest and independent. She would do whatever she could to help others out and had a servant's heart. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by her son, Wesley Mathis and wife, Darlene; daughter, Mary Murphy and husband, Jack; grandchildren, Jeff Mathis, James Mathis and wife, Terri, and Clint Murphy and wife, Kristal; great-grandchildren, Rick Sumner, Kelli Murphy, Ashley Murphy, Holden Mathis, Landen Mathis and Gracyn Mathis; brother, Kenneth Underhill and wife, Jean; numerous, nieces and nephews; and other extended family.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, J.J. Mathis; grandson, Mike Murphy; parents, Joe and Clara Underhill; brother, Joe Underhill; and sisters, Ardelle Coffee and Lilly Maria Hoover.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 30, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Nowlin Anders Funeral Home with Brother Dan Burlison and Brother Kenneth Wilson officiating. Ruby was laid to rest beside her husband, JJ, in De Leon Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital at 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Alzheimer's Association at 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601, in memory of Ruby.Thursday
